What Is Schema Markup? Structured Data Explained Simply

Schema markup is a label layer for your website: invisible code that tells machines exactly what your content is, this is a business, this is its phone number, this is an article, this is a price. Humans see your page; crawlers see your page plus the labels, and pages with clear labels get richer search results and more AI citations. Here is what it is and what to do about it.

Why it matters more every year

Search engines guess what a page means; schema removes the guessing. The rewards are concrete: review stars, FAQ dropdowns, and event details directly in results, better eligibility for rich features, and clean machine-readability at the moment AI answer engines are deciding whom to quote. Google has to infer that “Confidency” is an organization with a founder and services; schema states it outright.

The types that matter for a business site

  • Organization or LocalBusiness: who you are, logo, contacts, socials. The identity anchor every other page references.
  • Article on every blog post: headline, author, dates, the baseline for content that wants search visibility.
  • FAQPage where you genuinely answer questions on the page, the markup behind FAQ dropdowns in results.
  • Breadcrumb: how your URLs relate, shown in listings.
  • Product and Offer if you sell: price, availability, reviews.
  • Service entries for what you offer, useful for agencies and B2B companies generally.

One rule governs all of it: schema must describe what is visibly on the page. Marking up reviews you do not show or FAQs that do not exist is the fast lane to a manual penalty.

How it is added, practically

Modern schema is a small JSON block in the page head (JSON-LD), written once per template: your CMS or developer generates it from real page data so it never drifts from the content. On our own site, every article carries Article plus Breadcrumb schema automatically and the organization data rides on every page; that is the pattern to ask your developer for, generated, not hand-pasted.

Validate it, then forget it

Two free checks: Google’s Rich Results Test for feature eligibility, and the Schema.org validator for correctness. Run them at launch and after redesigns; between those moments, generated schema maintains itself. If Search Console reports structured data errors, they name the exact field, which makes this one of the most fixable corners of SEO.

Priority check for your site

If you have zero schema, adding Organization and Article covers most of the value in an afternoon of developer time. If an agency built your site recently, ask them to show the schema in the page source; its absence tells you something about the launch discipline you paid for.
