AI search changes one fundamental thing: instead of ranking ten blue links, the machine reads the web and answers directly, citing the sources it trusted. Winning visibility now means being quotable, not just rankable. The good news: the tactics overlap heavily with good SEO, they just get stricter.
What actually changed
Three surfaces now sit between you and searchers: Google’s AI Overviews summarize answers above the results, ChatGPT and Perplexity answer questions with citations, and traditional rankings still run underneath it all. Every surface draws from the same pool: crawlable pages, clear structure, and content that answers questions cleanly. Sites that were vague but well-linked used to survive; AI systems skip vague.
How AI systems choose what to cite
Reverse-engineering the citations across our own and client content, the pattern is consistent. AI answers favor pages that:
- Answer the question in the first two sentences, then elaborate. A definition or a number up top gets lifted; a slow wind-up gets skipped.
- Use headings that match real questions. “What does a SaaS website cost?” as an H2 maps directly onto what people ask the machine.
- Carry structured data. Organization, Article, FAQ, and Breadcrumb schema label your content in machine language: the same markup that was already good practice.
- Show verifiable specifics. Numbers, ranges, dates, and named tradeoffs get quoted; “it depends on many factors” does not.
- Come from a coherent source. Sites with one connected subject, built through interlinked articles, read as authorities. Scattered topics read as content farms.
What to do, concretely
Restructure answers to the top. Take your key pages and make the opening paragraph a complete answer a machine could quote alone. We write every article this way, which is why several are structured like the cost breakdown: number first, reasoning after.
Keep the technical floor high. Fast, crawlable, semantic, accessible pages with valid schema. AI crawlers are less patient than Googlebot, not more.
Write for questions, not just keywords. Comparison pieces, checklists, and honest “what does X cost” content dominate AI citations because they map onto how people phrase prompts. This shaped our whole content approach.
Keep your brand attached to facts. AI answers strip most branding, but cited sources get named. Being the named source for “how long a website takes” is the new ranking position one.
What not to do
Do not mass-generate pages to feed the machines; scaled thin content is exactly what both Google’s spam systems and AI filters are tuned to drop. And do not block AI crawlers in a panic: for a business that sells expertise, being uncitable is invisibility, and visibility is the whole point of the work.
We build sites AI can read and quote, and it shows in every layer, from schema to sentence structure. Want yours audited for the AI-search era? hello@beconfidency.agency.
