Web Typography: The 90 Percent of Design Most Sites Ignore

Web typography is most of web design: the majority of any page is text, so how that text is set decides whether a site reads as considered or thrown together. The good news is that a handful of decisions carry nearly all the effect, and none require a design degree to audit.

The five decisions that carry everything

1. One or two typefaces, chosen on purpose. A characterful face for headlines, a workhorse for body, or one variable family doing both, the approach behind our own editorial look, where Inter at violent size contrast does all the work. Three or more families almost always reads as indecision.

2. A real scale. Sizes should step by system (a ratio or a defined ladder), not by eyeball. The jump between body and headline is where confidence lives: timid 24px headlines are the most common tell of an undesigned site, and 2026’s trend toward expressive type is pushing the brave end.

3. Line length: 45 to 75 characters. The single most violated rule on the web. Full-width paragraphs on desktop are unreadable; a max-width on text columns fixes half of a site’s perceived quality in one CSS line.

4. Line height by role. Roughly 1.5 for body, tighter (1.1 or less) for large headlines. Loose headlines fall apart; cramped paragraphs exhaust.

5. Genuine hierarchy. Size, weight, and spacing should make the reading order unmistakable before anyone reads a word, the typographic half of information architecture.

The details that separate professional from default

Real contrast ratios for text color (accessibility is typography too), tabular figures wherever numbers align in dashboards and money interfaces, tight punctuation habits, and restraint with centered text: it suits headlines and invitations, never paragraphs. None of these are visible individually; together they are the difference readers feel but cannot name.

Performance is part of typography

Fonts are often the heaviest render-blocking assets on a page. The professional setup: self-hosted variable fonts in woff2, preloaded, with font-display swap so text never waits, exactly the treatment that keeps type from wrecking Core Web Vitals. If a site uses six weights from a CDN, its typography is slowing it down twice.

The ten-minute audit

Open your site and check: more than two typefaces? Body lines longer than about 75 characters? Headlines barely bigger than paragraphs? Gray text failing contrast? Each yes is an afternoon fix with outsized payoff, typography being the rare part of design where polish is nearly free once you know where to look.
