Redrawing a Logo From a JPG: How a Vector Rebuild Works

It happens constantly. The designer who made the logo is unreachable, the agency folded, the laptop with the source files died, and all that survives is a JPG pulled off the old website at 600 pixels wide with white fringing around the edges. Now the sign maker wants vector artwork. This is a solvable problem, and how it is solved determines whether you end up with a real asset or a slightly better looking mess.

Why auto tracing is not the answer

Every vector tool has an automatic trace function, and the result almost always looks acceptable at a glance and falls apart on inspection.

Auto trace follows the pixels, including the compression artefacts and the anti aliased soft edges. What should be one clean circle becomes a wobbling outline with two hundred anchor points. Straight lines are slightly not straight. Curves have flat spots. Corners that should be sharp are rounded by whatever the JPG did to them. Colours split into several near identical values sampled from the noise.

Print that at three metres on a sign and every flaw is visible. Worse, the file is nearly impossible to edit later, because moving one node in a path with hundreds of them does not do what you expect. Auto trace is acceptable for a rough placeholder and for nothing that represents your company.

What a proper rebuild involves

The correct method is redrawing, not converting. The image goes into the background as a reference, and the mark is constructed on top of it with real geometry.

That means circles drawn as circles, rectangles as rectangles, symmetrical elements built once and mirrored, and curves made from as few anchor points as the shape allows. It means aligning things that were meant to align and were half a pixel out in the original. The result looks like the logo you had, except it is mathematically clean, editable, and scalable to any size.

Type gets identified rather than traced. If the wordmark uses a real typeface, the correct approach is to find it, set the text properly, apply whatever custom adjustments the original designer made, and then convert to outlines. Font identification tools plus an experienced eye get this right most of the time. If the lettering was custom drawn, it gets redrawn as shapes.

Colour gets rebuilt too, sampled from the cleanest area rather than the compressed edges, and reduced to the small set of exact values the brand actually uses.

Decide what to fix while you are in there

A rebuild is a rare opportunity, because someone is touching every curve anyway. The question worth asking is how faithful to be.

Pure reconstruction reproduces the original exactly, flaws included. Right when the mark is well known and any visible change would be noticed, or when legal or trademark considerations require the registered form.

Quiet correction keeps the mark recognisably identical while fixing what was objectively wrong: uneven spacing, a stroke that was slightly thicker on one side, a shape that was never quite symmetrical, an alignment that was off. Nobody notices anything except that it looks sharper. This is usually the right answer.

Rebuild plus modernise goes further, simplifying detail so it survives small sizes and updating proportion or colour. At that point you have crossed into evolving the mark rather than rescuing it, which is a decision to make deliberately rather than to drift into.

Deliver the whole set, not one file

The rebuild is only worth doing once, so finish the job properly: full lockup, compact lockup, and icon; full colour, single colour black, and reversed white; in every format your suppliers will ask for, plus the purpose drawn small versions that a favicon and app icon require.

Keep the editable master somewhere the company controls. The whole reason this article exists is that somebody, once, did not.

What you need to supply

The best available source, which is not always the obvious one. Look for a PDF of an old brochure, a business card artwork file, an EPS attached to an ancient email, or an embroidery file, since any of those may contain vector data already and turn a rebuild into a five minute extraction.

Failing that, the largest, least compressed image that exists. A 2000 pixel PNG from the old site beats a 400 pixel JPG from a signature. Include a photograph of a printed version if one exists, because print often shows detail the web version lost, and note the typeface if anyone remembers it.

Then say where it will be used. A mark destined for vehicle wraps and embroidery needs different treatment from one that will only ever appear on a website, and the answer changes how much simplification is appropriate.
